Born on April 24, 1972, in DeLand, Florida, Jones was a standout baseball player at Bolles School in Jacksonville, Florida.
Jones was selected first overall by the Braves in the 1990 MLB draft and made his MLB debut in 1993. He was a switch-hitter and played primarily as a third baseman but also spent some time as a left fielder.
