Peter Helliar and Bridget Helliar’s Dating Life
The word kismet has a lot of force. The thought that fate might lead us to something that is “meant to be” is both enticing and horrifying at the same time. It’s not a word Peter Helliar expected to play a part in shaping his own destiny.
But, while waiting to take a flight from Sydney to Melbourne in 1999, everything changed. When Peter was 24 and just starting his comedic career, he noticed a lovely blonde across the boarding gate lounge and felt compelled to introduce himself.
The actor angrily admonished himself, “For better or worse, you’re not the man who approaches strange women.” As a result, he let the moment pass him by, hoping that he’d be seated next to her on the trip. “However, it did not occur,” he says. “And I recall being relieved.” Imagine how humiliating it will be when her boyfriend brings her up at the airport, and she says, ‘This is the guy that tried to hit on me,'” I thought.
The comedian spotted the potential girl of his dreams once more being met by her parents and grandmother. ‘I missed an opportunity, but that’s okay,’ he reflected. And off he went house, putting the encounter out of his mind.

Then there was kismet. Peter was about to perform a stand-up act at Collingwood’s Prince Patrick Hotel three days later when he noticed a friend in the audience. Next to him was Bridget, a 22-year-old woman from the airline who would become his wife of over 18 years and mother of their three children, Liam, Aidan, and Oscar.
“I have no recall of him,” she chuckles today as the couple tells The Weekly about their Sliding Doors romance over lunch. “He got up on stage and did this strange routine that I haven’t seen him do before.” But then he invited us to his birthday party the following weekend, and that’s when I decided, ‘This man is fairly cool.'”
Peter Helliar and Bridget Helliar’s Married Life
The two were inseparable almost immediately, bonding over their same sense of humor as well as shared family values. Within a year of that fateful meeting, she was on her way to Europe on an unspecified return date. Peter, who had recently secured a significant role on the prime-time variety show Rove, could not accompany her.
The handsome hunk wrote a song for Bridget, with the help of a musician friend, Steven Gates of the comic troupe Tripod. “Whatever happens in the future occurs, but this is how I feel,” he said as they sat in the car together one night.
In 2001, the couple tied the knot. Since then, the pair have been happily married, and they now have three children: Liam, 18, Aidan, 16, and Oscar, 12. In November 2021, they will celebrate their 20th wedding anniversary, and Peter will pay tribute to his wife on social media.
