Harry Gulkin’s Early Life

Harry Gulkin was born on November 14, 1927, in Montreal. He is the son of Russian-Jewish immigrants Raya and Peter Gulkin. Gulkin left Baron Byng High School shortly before World War II and joined the merchant marines.

It was revealed in the 2012 documentary film Stories We Tell that he was the biological father of the film’s director, Sarah Polley, through an affair with Polley’s married mother, Diane Elizabeth Polley. Gulkin passed away on July 23, 2018, when he was 91 years old.

Harry Gulkin’s net worth is unknown, but he earned most of his income by directing movies. When his service was completed, he returned to Montréal and began working in social advocacy. Gulkin then went to work for the Canadian Tribune, a communist weekly. He worked as an art critic and business manager there.

After the atrocities committed by the Stalin regime in the Soviet Union were revealed, he renounced communism in 1956. He went on to work as a marketing executive for Steinberg’s supermarket chain.

The artist decided to become a filmmaker in 1970. His breakthrough film was the 1975 drama Lies My Father Told Me. Adapted from Ted Allan‘s story, the film was nominated for an Academy Award for best screenplay and won a Golden Globe for best foreign film.

Gulkin was the director of the Saidye Bronfman Center for the Arts from 1983 to 1987. He began a 20-year career as a project manager for the Société de développement des entreprises culturelles in 1987.

The theatre producer’s granddaughter is singer-songwriter Corey Gulkin formerly Corinna Rose. Her song “Green Mountain State” can be heard during the credits of his daughter Sarah Polley‘s film Take This Waltz and also in the movie trailer. “All the Things I’ll Forget,” Corey’s song, is a tribute to her grandfather. Corey also appears briefly in the documentary film Harry Gulkin: Red Dawn on Main Street.
