Grammy Award-winning singer Jon Batiste has secretly married.

Jon Batiste is officially married and is now a husband. In February, the Grammy winner, 35, secretly married longtime partner Suleika Jaouad. As she was diagnosed with leukemia for the second time, Jaouad, the bestselling author of the cancer memoir Between Two Kingdoms, informed CBS Sunday Morning that the husband and wife wanted to marry.

“We got married the day before I went in for my bone marrow transplant,” she explained. “We did know we wanted to marry from the first week of dating, I believe. That’s when Jon first broached the subject of marriage with me. So we’ve been together for eight years “Jaouad cracked a joke. “This isn’t, like, a hasty decision!”

Even though the couple married before her bone marrow transplant, Jaouad, 33, said her diagnosis had no bearing on Batiste’s decision to propose.

“‘I just want to be clear, I’m not proposing to you because of this diagnosis,’ he said. It took me a year to create your ring. So just remember that the timing is irrelevant. But please understand that this diagnosis is meaningless. It just reinforces my desire to commit to this and for us to be together,’ she says “Jaouad told CBS News. “But when we realized we only had a small window before the bone marrow transplant, we decided to go for it.”

Last year, the musician told PEOPLE about the making of his album, We Are, and how his song “Show Me the Way” exemplifies the manifestation of his relationship with Jaouad. “It speaks to a lot of my childhood and our relationship,” Batiste said. “Having that piece of our relationship cut out and put into the album is a beautiful thing.”

After receiving a whopping 11 nominations on the night, Batiste took home five awards, including best music video and album of each year, at the 64th Annual Grammy Awards on Sunday. Following his victories, Batiste was asked about the “duality” of the moment in light of his situation in the press room.

“It puts things into perspective. Life is full of ups and downs. And the ups and downs can occur at the same time “He stated. “When that happens, it really lets you know by shaking your consciousness and saying, ‘Be present.’ ‘Please be present.’ So what’s going on at home and what’s going on today are both in their rightful places for me.”
