In 2014, the National Association of Black Journalists called the reporter “Emerging Journalist of the Year.” Lowery joined the Washington Post in 2014, and The Washingtonian called him a “rising star…a terrific writer” with a track record of “establishing deep sources, writing colorful solo articles, and contributing to team coverage.

Wesley was a lead along with Kimbrell Kelly on the Post’s “Fatal Force” project, which recorded 990 police shootings in 2015. The federal government did not have extensive, national data on police shootings at the time; the most systematic data was available from databases collected by independent, community groups such as Fatal Encounters, Stolen Lives Project, Operation Ghetto Storm, and Killed by Police.

The Journalist and colleagues created the Post’s Fatal Force database using these sources, as well as local newspaper accounts, law enforcement blogs, and social media. In 2016, the initiative was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for National Reporting, and in 2017, the Justice Department launched a pilot program to begin gathering a more detailed collection of use-of-force data.

Lowery will join CBS News in 2020. It is suspected that one of the reasons for his departure was dissatisfaction with The Washington Post’s social media policies, which prevented some of Lowery’s more inflammatory remarks on Twitter and elsewhere; Lowery had previously clashed with the managing editors over the content of his tweets. He works at CBS News on 60 in 6, a six-minute spinoff of 60 Minutes for Quibi.

Wesley Lowery’s Ferguson Coverage and Arrest

Wesley Lowery covered the Ferguson protests for The Washington Post in August 2014. Lowery and Huffington Post writer Ryan Reilly were arrested in a McDonald’s on August 13. Journalism organizations, as well as Lowery’s and Reilly’s bosses, protested the arrests, calling them “deliberate and unjustifiable efforts to intervene with the press,” as the Columbia Journalism Review put it.

The Emerging Journalist and Reilly were charged with trespassing and interfering with a police officer a year later, just before the statute of limitations was due to expire. Prosecutors dropped all charges against Reilly and Lowery in return for the reporters agreeing not to sue the city.

Wesley Lowery’s Book

On November 15, 2016, Little, Brown published Lowery’s first book, They Can’t Kill Us All: Ferguson, Baltimore, and a New Era of America’s Racial Justice Movement. Lowery’s personal experience is intertwined with the Black Lives Matter movement in the light of US history. The Seattle Times classified it as one of the “can’t-wait-to-read” fall launches.

According to the Boston Globe, Lowery “offers fresh insights into what it takes to cover a broad national story about race in a systematic and sustained manner.” The New York Times said of Lowery’s novel, which he wrote at the age of 25, “his book is electric, because it is so well reported, so clearly told, and so obviously the work of a man who has not grown a callus on his heart.”

Lowery received the Los Angeles Times Book Prizes’ 2017 Christopher Isherwood award for autobiographical prose for They Can’t Kill Us All.
