Albin Carl Wopat (December 10, 1919 – January 27, 1983) and Ruth Arlene (née Skarda) Wopat (May 20, 1920 – September 23, 1959) were his parents. His father was a devoted Roman Catholic and a dairy farmer with Czech ancestry.

Wopat is the family’s sixth of eight children. Dave and Rick Wopat are two of his brothers. He began singing and dancing in school musicals when he was 12 years old, and after graduating from high school, he decided to pursue music as a career.

Wopat attended and graduated from Lodi High School and later went to the University of Wisconsin and majored in music. However, he only stayed for two years before leaving to form his rock band, in which he was both guitarist and lead singer.
