Prince Harry is pursuing a judicial review of the Home Office’s rejection to allow him to pay for his own police security while in the UK. The Duke of Sussex, who is headquartered in the United States, claims that his private security team does not have proper international authority and thus needs police protection.

After stepping down from royal duties in 2020, the Duke of Sussex lost his taxpayer-funded police protection. Prince Harry says he wants to visit his home country with his family but needs to “ensure” their safety. Following a security incident in London in July 2021, when paparazzi trailed the duke’s car as he left a charity event, the application for judicial review – a challenge in the High Court against a public body’s decision or government department – was filed.

The legal action was launched in September “to question the decision-making underlying the security procedures, in the hopes that this could be re-evaluated for the obvious and necessary protection required,” according to a legal counsel for Prince Harry.

“Not to impose on the taxpayer,” they claimed. Prince Harry wants to fund his own police security. With their access to local intelligence and legal authority, the duke, who is now headquartered in California, claims that his private security team cannot emulate the work of police protection in the UK.

“Prince Harry inherited a security risk at birth, the rest of his life,” according to a statement. He is the sixth in line to the throne, has served two tours of combat in Afghanistan, and his family has faced well-documented neo-Nazi and extremist threats in recent years.”

In January 2020, as the Sussexes’ future role was being discussed with the Queen at Sandringham, his legal representative said he offered to pay the costs of police security. The offer, however, was turned down, according to the spokesman.

Prince Harry wants his children and family to be safe while they are in the UK. As of now, there is no immediate plan for Sussexes to visit the UK, but they might come over during the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Celebration later this year. If that happened so, it would be the first time The Sussex seven-month-old daughter, Lilibet, will meet her great-grandmother the Queen, grandfather the Prince of Wales, and other family members face to face. Sadly, the little Lilibet will never get to know her great-grandfather Prince Philip as he passed away in April.
