Netflix has canceled Meghan Markle‘s animated series due to a wave of cuts driven by the streaming service’s declining user base. According to Deadline, the show developed by Meghan Markle, Pearl, has been officially canceled. The show, which the Duchess of Sussex devised through Archewell Productions, was still in the early stages of creation.

In September 2020, Markle and Prince Harry founded Archewell Productions, intending to produce scripted series, docu-series, documentaries, films, and children’s programming. Pearl was supposed to be the production company’s debut animated series.

The show, which was announced last year, is one of several projects being dropped by the streaming giant.

Despite the cancellation of Pearl, Netflix insiders report that the Archewell deal remains promising, with several projects in the works, including a documentary story called Heart of Invictus, which will cover the recent Invictus Games. On April 15, 2022, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Visit Queen Elizabeth.

Netflix has made some changes recently, including the cancellation of two more children’s series and the dismissal of employees. Jeff King‘s Dino Daycare and the South Asian-inspired adventure Boons and Curses were both pulled from the streaming site last week. Both shows were in the works at the time.
According to sources familiar with the cancellations, Netflix had warned producers to take projects still in development elsewhere. Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were awarded at NAACP Image Awards,

It’s unclear whether they advised Archewell Productions in the same way. In September 2020, the streaming giant paid the Duke and Duchess of Sussex $100 million in an agreement. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have yet to generate any publicly available content for the streaming behemoth. However, the firm hopes that their planned documentary series about the recent Invictus Games will be worthwhile.

Last July, Markle announced the now-canceled show. She’d be working as a ‘creator and executive producer,’ marking the first time the former actress and Suits star had taken on such a role. Elton John‘s husband, filmmaker David Furnish, was also set to serve as an executive producer on the project. Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have also attended their first super bowl.

Meghan is a Welsh name that is traditionally spelled, Megan. However, it is derived from the Greek name Margaret, which is derived from the word margarita, which means ‘pearl.’ Pearl isn’t the first time Markle has used her personal experiences as inspiration for her professional endeavors; she did it most recently with her debut children’s book The Bench, which critics widely derided on both sides of the Atlantic.
