Al Green is a $25 million-plus net-worth-holding gospel and soul singer from the United States. He was described as “one of the most gifted purveyors of soul music” when he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Green, dubbed “The Last of the Great Soul Singers,” amassed his fortune via hit singles like “You Ought to Be with Me,” “Love and Happiness,” “I’m Still in Love with You,” “Take Me to the River,” and “Let’s Stay Together” in the 1970s and has sold over 20 million albums.
Linda Wills, Green’s former secretary, filed a $100,000 lawsuit against him in 1974, alleging that the Singer beat her and shoved her through a glass door after an argument. Al was arrested for assault and battery in 1978 after reportedly hitting a Memphis woman, Lovie Smith, unconscious with a tree limb. The charges were dropped the next year after Smith moved and could not receive a subpoena, resulting in her missing her court appearance.

Al Green deleted the last “e” from his last name before recording his debut solo album, “Green Is Blues,” in 1969. His first Gold album, “Let’s Stay Together,” was published in 1972, and the title single reached #1 on the “Billboard” Hot 100 and is still his most popular tune. Green’s album “I’m Still in Love with You” was certified Platinum later that year, and the title track and the song “Look What You Did for Me” also went Gold.
The artist’s sales began to decline, so he shifted his concentration to gospel music, recording six albums for the Christian label Myrrh Records. Al won two Grammys for his first gospel album, “The Lord Will Make a Way,” released in 1980.

In 1982, Green co-starred on Broadway with Patti LaBelle in “Your Arms Too Short to Box with God.” He was the subject of the documentary “Gospel According to Al Green” in 1984. In 1988, Al released “Put a Little Love in Your Heart” with Annie Lennox, marking his comeback to secular music.
He worked with several other singers, including Queen Latifah, John Legend, Ann Nesby, and Questlove of The Roots produced Green’s most recent album, “Lay It Down,” which debuted at #3 on the Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums list 2008.
Al Green’s Tragic Relationship – Suicide and Abuse
Speaking about Al Green’s love life, it was anything but a smooth ride. Mary Woodson, Al Green’s girlfriend, assaulted him at his Memphis home in 1974. Woodson flung scorching grits at Green, causing second-degree burns since he refused to marry her even though she was already married at the time.
Mary then committed suicide by shooting herself in the head with Al’s gun. He resolved to change his life after the sad tragedy, and he founded the Full Gospel Tabernacle Church in Memphis in 1976, where Al has been preaching and singing ever since.
The singer married Shirley Kyles on June 15, 1977, and the couple had three kids before splitting up in 1983. Shirley claimed that Al abused her during their marriage, and she testified that while she was five months pregnant, Green struck her with a boot, creating a head wound that required stitches. Al is the father of seven children: Al Jr., Trevor, and Kala, in addition to the children he had with Shirley.
Al Green’s Early Life
Albert Leornes Greene was born on April 13, 1946, in Forrest City, Arkansas. He had nine siblings and grew up with his mother, Cora Lee, and father, Robert Jr. When Al was ten years old, he and his brothers established the Green Brothers, a singing group.
The family moved to Grand Rapids, Michigan, in the late 1950s, and when he was young, his father kicked him out of the house for listening to soul singer Jackie Wilson‘s songs.
