Will Smith Apologizes to Chris Rock for Slapping

Will Smith issued an apology to Chris Rock on Monday, saying he was “out of line” and “embarrassed” after hitting him at the Academy Awards on Sunday night. Smith wrote on Instagram on Monday night, “Violence in all of its forms is poisonous and destructive.” “My behavior at the Academy Awards last night was disgusting and irresponsible.“

“It’s part of the job to make jokes at my expense,” the American actor continued, “but a joke about Jada’s physical condition was too much for me to handle, and I reacted emotionally.” Smith slapped Rock after the comedian made a joke about Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, appearance. “Keep my wife’s name out of your f——-g lips!” he exclaimed as he returned to his seat at the Dolby Theatre.

After the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences issued a statement saying it “condemns Mr. Smith’s actions at last night’s show,” Smith apologized. “In compliance with our bylaws, standards of conduct, and California law, we have formally begun a formal review of the incident and will consider further action and repercussions,” it stated.

When he earned the best actor Oscar for his part in “King Richard,” a picture of Venus and Serena Williams’ father, Smith drew criticism for not personally apologizing to Rock.
