Steve Brookstein auditioned for the first season of The X Factor in early 2004, a new television talent show aimed at discovering a star recording artist in the United Kingdom. Steve Brookstein’s First Album Heart and Soul
Steve Brookstein was instantly signed to the Sony BMG record label after winning The X-Factor, and his debut song, a version of Against All Odds, was released on December 20, 2004. The song debuted at number two on the UK Singles Chart before rising to number one on January 8, 2005, and remaining there for one week.
The song reached number 11 in Ireland. The song’s music video featured a collage of scenes from his experience on The X-Factor, from his first audition to his last performance after winning the competition.
Brookstein’s first album, Heart and Soul,” was released by Sony BMG on May 9, 2005, five months after his first song hit number one. The album was an instant hit, landing at number one on the UK charts and selling over 250,000 copies. Brookstein continued to play songs from his album on performances, but a second single was never released.
Only eight months after winning The X-Factor and despite the success of his first song and album, Sony BMG withdrew him from their roster in August 2005. He was supposedly dropped because he declined to make a second album of covers instead of insisting that his next album contains many original, self-penned songs.

Steve Brookstein, 53, spent the following year creating his work and building his own record company after being sacked by Sony BMG. On October 2, 2006, he independently released Fighting Butterflies, his second single (and the first from his planned album).
Despite being backed and promoted by a music video, the song failed to break the UK Top 75, peaking at #193. Brookstein persisted, and on October 9, 2006, he published his second album, 40,000 Things. However, the album was a commercial failure, reaching #165 on the Billboard 200.
Brookstein went on a statewide tour of tiny venues to promote his new album from September to November 2006. Many of the events were sold out; however, a few had to be canceled due to poor ticket sales. Brookstein performed as a cabaret act with series 2 X-Factor alumni Chico Slimani and Journey South on the P&O Portsmouth to Bilbao boat in June 2007.
Brookstein recorded and contributed the song Head Over Heels to Ian Levine’s Disco 2008 CD in October 2007.
