His father was Nicholas Turturro Sr, an Italian immigrant from Giovinazzo, Italy. He served in the Navy and fought on D-Day. His mother, Katherine Florence, also of Italian ancestry, was an amateur jazz singer. During WWII, she worked at the Navy Yard.
