Alani Nicole Vázquez was born on June 25, 1979, in Brooklyn, New York. She is best known by her nickname La La, and she goes by her husband’s surname Anthony. She identifies as Afro-Puerto Rican, and both of her parents are of Puerto Rican descent.

At the Market America World Conference in Miami, Florida, La La debuted her cosmetic line, MOTIVES by La La, in 2012. Her vision to create cosmetic products for women of color inspired the creation of the line, which included products for the face, cheeks, eyes, lips, and nails.
The author launched her clothing line, 5th and Mercer, the following year. It was a limited-edition collection available only on Shopbop.com. This is not her only clothing line; in October 2019, La La Anthony Collection was launched.

On Christmas Day 2004, La La Anthony became engaged to NBA professional basketball player Carmelo Anthony. Kiyan Carmelo Anthony, their son, was born on March 7, 2007. Michael Eric Dyson married the couple on July 10, 2010, at Cipriani’s in New York in front of 320 guests.
