Patterson’s first band, The Unknowns, was established in third grade with lifelong buddy Tommy Poitras. The Unknowns were added to their setlist and performed throughout elementary, middle, and high school, but they split after graduation.

In 1983, Scott Patterson was a member of the Nashville Sounds. Patterson pitched professionally in minor league baseball for seven years, from 1980 to 1986, reaching the Triple-A level, the highest level before the big leagues. He played for seven minor league clubs in two big-league farm systems and was named on four all-star teams (two with Atlanta and two with the New York Yankees).

Patterson was taken in the first round (12th overall) in the 1980 Major League Baseball supplemental draft by the Atlanta Braves (an event distinct from the amateur draft). In 1980, he made his skilled debut with the Class A Anderson Braves. Patterson established a Braves record for most consecutive victories when he won 13 straight games as a starter between Class A Durham and Double-A Savannah in 1981. He was selected Minor League Pitcher of the Month twice by the Braves.

On April 23, 1982, Patterson was dealt from the Braves to the New York Yankees in exchange for Bob Watson, and he was promoted to the Major League squad in 1983. In 1986, Patterson was chosen to the Yankees’ Double-A Albany-Colonie Yankees and Triple-A Columbus Clippers All-Star teams. The Texas Rangers picked him in the Rule 5 draft in 1985, but he returned to the Yankees. Patterson was selected Minor League Pitcher of the Month once and Pitcher of the Week three times while with the Yankees.

Patterson also pitched for the Lobos de Arecibo in the Puerto Rican Winter League in 1984–85 and Santo Domingo in the Dominican Professional Baseball League in 1985–86. Patterson signed a minor league deal with the Albuquerque Dukes, a Los Angeles Dodgers affiliate, in late 1986, but he never played in the big leagues.
