Angelina Jolie’s Former Stepson Praises Her, Calls Her ‘Awesome’
Angelina Jolie‘s divorce from actor and filmmaker Billy Bob Thornton was formalized in 2003. Even though Angelina Jolie’s marriage to Brad Pitt ended in divorce, she maintains a close relationship with her stepson Harry James Thornton. In an interview with ET on Wednesday, Harry stated that the 46-year-old Academy Award winner still calls him on occasion and even gives him Christmas gifts every year.
‘She still sends me Christmas gifts and everything like that every year,‘ Harry added. ‘I do not however call her on a daily basis, but we do talk now and again.’ Billy Bob shares Harry with Pietra Dawn Cherniak, a former Playboy model with whom he was married from 1993 until their divorce in 1997, following her claims that he had assaulted her in front of their children.
Before their brief courtship, Thornton and Jolie co-starred in the 1999 film Pushing Tin. In 2000, the couple married after only two months together. To him and his siblings, she was “so cool,” Harry said. ‘She used to take us camping every week, and one time she leased an RV and we went on a full camping trip,’ he recalled. ‘She used to be so much fun for us when we were younger. She was, like, a lot of fun.’
Thornton shares William Thornton, 28, with Cherniak and Harry, 27. The Sling Blade star has six wives and has two daughters: Amanda Brumfield, who he shares with his first wife Melissa Lee Gatlin, and Bella Thornton, 17, who he has with his current wife, Connie Angland.
Thornton had been engaged to Laura Dern for two years before beginning his relationship with Jolie. Jolie adopted her son Maddox from Cambodia late in their relationship, and she divorced Thornton three months later in 2002.
In a 2004 Vogue story, the Changeling actress recalled how her marriage fell apart ‘overnight.’ ‘It surprised me, too, because we had completely changed overnight.’ ‘I suppose we just didn’t have anything in common one day,‘ she explained. ‘And it’s frightening, but… I believe it may happen when you become involved and don’t know yourself.’
While promoting his new nepotism-themed reality series Relatively Famous: Ranch Rules, which premiered on E! on Wednesday, Harry reflected on his time with his stepmother. The show follows eight celebrity children as they forego the luxuries provided to them by their parents’ money to live and work on a ranch for some time.
The show is based on Filthy Rich: Cattle Drive, which starred Kourtney Kardashian before she joined Keeping Up With The Kardashians. Harry is joined by David Hasselhoff‘s children, Martin Lawrence, Eazy-E, Ray Parker Jr., Billy Gunn, Shaquille O’Neal, and Pat Benatar. Before starting the series, Harry stated that his renowned father gave him some basic advice: “Don’t do anything humiliating,” he remarked.
