On March 16, 1920, Leo McKern was born in Sydney, New South Wales. He went into a nursing home near Bath in Somerset in 2002, where he died a few weeks later at the age of 82, suffering from terrible health in his final years. His ashes were scattered in Bath’s Haycombe Cemetery.

Vera (née Martin) and Norman Walton McKern are his parents. He attended Sydney Technical High School and was known as “Leo” when he was a child. After graduating from high school, he began working in a factory, where, at the age of 15, he was involved in an accident that resulted in the loss of his left eye.

The Rumpole of the Bailey star began his career as an engineering apprentice, then as an artist, before joining the Royal Australian Engineers as a sapper during World War II. In 1944, he made his stage debut in Sydney, Australia. Leo traveled back and forth between England and Australia regularly to see family and friends and participate in films and plays. He got tickets to travel on cargo ships since he was afraid of flying.
