On February 3, 2019, 21 Savage was stopped and detained by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The four passengers with him, including his cousin, rapper Young Nudy, and two other men, had been targeted in a sting operation known as the Georgia Gang Act, which involved aggravated assault charges.
ICE discovered that 21 Savage, a British national, had been in the United States illegally since July 2006, when his non-immigrant visa expired. His lawyers argued that while 21 Savage admitted to overstaying his visa, he had been attempting to renew it since 2017 and was released, but his case is still pending as of March 2020. Joseph is currently barred from leaving the country.
Later that month, 21 Savage surrendered and was booked into a south Georgia jail on a felony theft by the deception arrest warrant. The dispute stems from a music gig in which 21 Savage accepted $17,000 to perform at a concert but did not show up and refused to return the money. He was released, and a court date for February 2020 is still pending.
