She spent most of her childhood in Philadelphia before relocating to Camden which is New Jersey. Her parents Lloyd Birdsong, Sr., and Annie Birdsong always supported their daughter and encouraged her to pursue her dreams.

Birdsong Began Her Musical Career After Being Contacted By Her Longtime Friend

Cindy was prepared to be a nurse and had just returned to Philadelphia after completing her nursing course. However, her old friend Patsy Holt contacted her to join their singing band.

In 1960, she replaced Sundray Tuckers and became a member of Holt’s singing group The Ordrettes. The group was comprised of mid-teen members which made her the oldest member of the team as she was 20 at that time.

Got Kidnapped

A year before her marriage, Cindy nearly got kidnapped when she was returning to her apartment with her boyfriend Charles Hewlett, and their friend Howard Meek.

The intruder threatened them with a knife and forced Cindy to tie them and get in the car. Luckily, she jumped out of the car to safety.

Cindy’s Maintainance Man Turned Himself In For Trying To Kidnap Cindy

Four days later of the incident, Charles Edward Collier called the police and turned himself into the police. He accepted all his bad deeds and was ready to go to jail.

It is not revealed why he Kidnapped Cindy and why did he turn himself in.

Replaced Co-Founding Member Florence Ballard Of The Supremes

Cindy was performing for the Patti LaBelle & the Blue Belles when she received the offer for joining The Supremes. She replaced the co-founding member Florence Ballard of the band.

Although she received some negativity in her early days, Cindy performed well and was admired by a lot of people. She became successful in making her way to one of the most loved performers in the series.

Birdsong faced some difficulties during her early days in the band The Supremes. In her early two and a half year of joining the band, listeners were not interested in her singles and they usually skipped them.

However, once Cindy started to display her exceptional talent under the newly reformed team as Diana Rose as a lead member, her songs were heard more prominently, including the three albums the group recorded with the Four Tops.

Cindy officially left the team in February 1976 as she was frustrated with the manager of the team. She was not happy with his work.

Cindy after leaving her work at The Supreme joined UCLA Medical center as a nurse and fulfilled her interest in nursing.

Apart from being a nurse and a singer, Cindy has also been involved in politics. She worked as a minister in the Los Angelos area.

Birdsong’s old friend Mary Wilson passed away because of an unknown cause at her house. She was one of the founding members of the famed band The Supremes.
