Chris Rock’s Mom Speaks Out About Oscar Incident
Chris Rock‘s mother has spoken out following the 94th Academy Awards altercation involving her son and Will Smith. Will was awarded for Best Actor in the movie King Richard. On Friday, Rose Rock spoke to local South Carolina news station WIS-TV about the time Smith stepped onstage at the Oscars and hit Chris, 57, in retaliation to a joke the comic made about Jada Pinkett Smith‘s shaved head. (Pinkett Smith, 50, has spoken publicly about her alopecia.)
Rose told WIS‘ Billie Jean Shaw, “You reacted to your wife giving you the side-eye, and you went and made her day because she was mulled over laughing when it happened.” She said she assumed the encounter was manufactured at first while watching it unfold on television from her house, but she recognized it was genuine when Smith, 53, began using “obscenities.”
“He smacked all of us when he hit Chris. He definitely hit me in the face “she stated. “Because if you injure my child, you’re hurting me as well.” “His speech was unheard. “No one could simply be in the moment because everyone was sitting there wondering, ‘What just happened?‘” she added, adding that her kid was “excited.” “During the event, Questlove will be presented with the honor.
Chris made his first public appearance days after the Oscars, stating, “I’m still digesting what occurred,” during a comedy gig. He assured the audience that he would most likely talk about what transpired later in a more severe context. Numerous celebrities, including Zoe Kravitz, shared their views on Will’s assault on Chris.
The King Richard star had apologized to Chris Rock for Slapping. Smith has subsequently resigned from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which is responsible for hosting the Academy Awards. The Academy also barred Rock from attending Academy events for the next ten years. In a letter, Academy President David Rubin and CEO Dawn Hudson expressed their gratitude to Rock, saying, “We want to express our deep gratitude to Mr. Rock for maintaining his composure under extraordinary circumstances.”
Earlier this month, Chris’ brother Kenny told the Los Angeles Times that Chris was unaware of Pinkett Smith‘s alopecia when he joked about her appearing in a G.I. Jane sequel, referring to Demi Moore‘s shorn head in the movie. “The joke was rather amusing. It wasn’t hilariously amusing, but I’m sure he wouldn’t make a joke about it if he knew she had alopecia. But he had no idea, “Kenny said.
