Benedict Cumberbatch Jokes about losing to Will Smith at the Oscars in an SNL monologue
This week, Benedict Cumberbatch, star of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, took over as host of Saturday Night Live. It was his second time hosting the show, and the Sherlock star entertained the audience with jokes about losing the Oscars to the King Richard actor and sending out some humorous Mother’s Day messages to his mother and wife, Sophie Hunter.
Cumberbatch made a brilliant joke about Will Smith’s Oscars incident, in which the actor punched presenter Chris Rock on stage during his opening monologue.
Using clever wordplay, the actor said, “I didn’t win the Oscar…I was beat by Will Smith.” After the audience applauded, Cumberbatch quickly interjected, “Oh. Not like that. Not physically.”
Later in the monologue, Benedict delivered some amusing Mother’s Day greetings to his mother and his wife Sophie, who sat in the audience.
Cumberbatch said in a message to his wife, “Hi, Sophie. It’s me, your husband, Little Benedict. I’m constantly in awe of you. You gave birth to our three beautiful boys and that is itself a minor miracle, and according to you I was off dressing up as a wizard. Although technically it’s a sorcerer. Wizards have robes, I have a cloak, it’s whole thing, don’t worry.”
Cumberbatch was in the SNL to promote his new Marvel movie, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. His co-star Elizabeth Olsen also did a small cameo in the SNL show. Furthermore, the film, which was released on Mother’s Day weekend, made $185 million at the box office over the weekend.
