Whoopi Goldberg is Suspended from ‘The View’
On Tuesday night, ABC News suspended “The View” host Whoopi Goldberg for two weeks, just one day after she drew widespread criticism for falsely declaring that the Holocaust was not about race. “I’m suspending Whoopi Goldberg for two weeks, effective immediately, for her inappropriate and hurtful remarks,” Kim Godwin, president of ABC News, issued a statement.
“While Whoopi has issued an apology, I’ve asked her to reflect on the impact of her remarks,” Godwin continued. “The entire ABC News organization stands with our Jewish colleagues, friends, family, and communities.”
Goldberg had apologized for her remarks, as Godwin stated in her statement. Goldberg apologized on Twitter on Monday night. And, on Tuesday, Goldberg returned to “The View” to issue yet another apology.

“I made a mistake on our show yesterday. “I posted on Twitter about it last night, but I want you to hear it directly from me,” the comedian and actor said. “I said something that makes me feel obligated to look into that because my words upset so many people, that was never my intention. I now understand why, and I will be eternally grateful because the information I received was extremely beneficial and helped me understand a variety of issues.”
“I said the Holocaust wasn’t about race, but about man’s inhumanity to man,” Goldberg said on “The View” on Tuesday. “However, it is a race issue because Hitler and the Nazis considered Jews to be an inferior race.”

Her remarks irritated ABC News employees. According to conversations with employees, while some accepted her apology, others believed disciplinary action was warranted. Goldberg is no stranger to scandal, having made a number of divisive remarks during her nearly 15-year tenure on the show.
She stated in 2009 that Roman Polanski was not guilty of “rape-rape,” a statement she later clarified. Goldberg also initially defended Bill Cosby in the face of sexual assault allegations, a stance she eventually reversed.
