The son of Hall of Fame basketball player Scottie Pippen passes away at age 33, the legendary Chicago Bulls forward revealed on Monday.

The elder Pippen made the shocking announcement on Instagram, uploading two pictures of him and Antron Pippen, a smiling young man, and an infant.

The NBA star captioned the post, writing:

“I was heartbroken to share that yesterday; I said goodbye to my firstborn son Antron. The two of us shared a love for basketball, and we had countless conversations about the game. Antron suffered from chronic asthma, and if he hadn’t had it. He truly believes he would have made it to the NBA. He never let that get him down. Antron stayed positive and struggled hard. I’m so proud of the man he became. A kind heart and beautiful soul went way too soon. I love you, son. Rest easy until we meet again.”

Pippen was heartbroken to share that yesterday; he said goodbye to his firstborn son Antron. Scottie writes, “the two of us shared a love for basketball, and we had countless conversations about the game.”

The younger Pippen played one season of Division II basketball, averaging 12.4 minutes. He made 3.4 points per game in 2008-09 at Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) in Laredo before joining the Upstate Heat of the World Basketball Association (WBA). Antron played a season of junior college ball at South Georgia Technical College in 2006-07.

Antron had made his home in the Atlanta area as of late.

Scottie Pippen played 17 seasons in the NBA and is widely acclaimed for pairing with Michael Jordan on six title-winning teams in Chicago. Pippen was an accomplished high school player in Georgia. They played basketball at South Georgia Tech and Texas A&M International with the Jets tweeting their condolences to the Pippen family.

The Jets family was saddened to learn of the death of one of our former players, Antron Pippen. Pippen’s high school career was well-chronicled, and he at one time falls under the list of top 100 prospects at his age level. He acknowledged that sharing the surname of a six-time NBA champion earned extra attention.

Antron Pippen was born on December 29, 1987, as the eldest of Scottie Pippen’s seven children. He was the only child from Pippen’s first marriage to Karen McCollum. The legendary player has six surviving children, including Scotty,20; Preston,19; Justin,16; and Sophia,13, with ex-wife Larsa Pippen; Taylor,26; whose mother is Scottie’s ex-lover Sonya Roby; and Sierra,26, with ex-fiancee Yvette DeLeon.
